Over the first two weeks of August, we have explored the culinary paradises of Italy and France.  This week, we shift our focus to Latin America.  With K&N Sales being headquartered in Houston, we are more than familiar with Latin American cuisine.  Due to Houston’s large Hispanic population, including a significant Mexican presence and the second largest number of Venezuelans next to Miami, Latin food plays a big part in our city’s dining scene.  Mexican, Venezuelan, Peruvian, Argentinian, Brazilian- you name it!  All of these Latin countries have been heavily influenced by their Spanish roots.

Guesthouse, Pool House and Garage Apartments

March 25, 2015 l Topics:Blogs l By kn

Garage apartments, pool houses and guest houses are typically small spaces that serve a function. Homeowners often overlook these spaces during renovation or purchase because they are not part of the main home. We have a few tips and tricks to turn your extra living space into a more prominent part of your home.

The Kitchen

Kitchens in these extra spaces are typically small. Bosch has a variety of smaller appliances that will fit in congested spaces. Their 18" Special Application Bar Handle Dishwasher is the quietest in its class with nine possible rack positions and InfoLight displays on the floor so you know when it’s running. The small width of this dishwasher makes it easy to put under you counter.

Smaller refrigerators are also a necessity in any home no matter the size. The GE 11.6 cu. ft. Top-Freezer Refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker, LED interior lighting, three adjustable spillproof glass fresh food shelves and three clear fixed door shelves which makes it perfect for storing food for guests in your extra space.

The Decor

If you are planning on renovating, we have our favorite trends for home interior in 2015:

  • Open Spaces: An open floor plan has long been popular, but it is perfect for your space. Removing the wall between the kitchen and living room will add an openness to your home.
  • Specialized Storage: Storage is not limited to extra space in your closets. There are great storage spaces that serve two functions. Our pick? Ottomans and benches that provide seating as well as open up to provide storage underneath are perfect for small spaces.
  • Coral Shades: These bright shades reflect optimism and add light to any space. While we suggest you refrain from painting every wall coral, an accent wall will be a nice touch to your home.

We have mentioned a few of our favorite small space trends and tips this month. Do you have any of your own that you wish to share?

Making Your Laundry Room A Splendid Space

March 19, 2015 l Topics:Blogs l By kn

Laundry rooms get little, if any, attention. While having a gorgeous laundry space is nice, it is more important to focus on its functionality. K&N Sales has several appliance and organizational options to help you, and your laundry room, reach the next level.

Cabinets & Countertops

Most people love solid wood cabinets and beautiful countertops. Your laundry room is one space where both of these aspirations need to fit the needs of the room. Laundry rooms tend to be humid making wood a not-so-great option. We suggest high-pressure laminate cabinets because water will not affect them. They are also able to withstand cleaning making them a wonderful alternative to wood cabinetry.

Bleach and stain-releasing spray are laundry room staples. Chances are you will lay your clothes out on the countertop before putting them in your washer. Quartz countertops are bleach resistant and easy to clean. These countertops will hold up against your toughest laundry regiment.

The Right Appliances

The perfect washer and dryer combination is essential to any laundry space. We carry an array of appliance brands to fit your home (and your budget).

If you have a smaller laundry room, we suggest the Bosch 24” laundry units. You can stack them or put them under your counter side-by-side maximizing your space. Bosch’s compact appliance combination will get your clothes from dirty to dry in 30 minutes flat.

Maytag has top of the line options for front loading or top loading washer and dryers. Their high efficiency are ENERGY STAR® Certified thus ensuring you save money on your energy bill. Each appliance has medium to large capacities and quiet operation capabilities. Designed and engineered in the USA, these appliances are backed by a 10-year limited part warranty on the washer and dryer motor, basket, and drum.

Organization Options

Last week, we mentioned some great ways to spruce up your closet by using the Rev-A-Shelf. This unique pullout laundry hamper looks (and acts) like any other drawer but stores your dirty clothes out-of-sight making it perfect for any laundry room. Pop-up ironing boards and a cleaning caddy make it easy to store all of your detergents, bleach, and dryer sheets while remaining organized.

K&N Sales is here to partner with you for all of your design needs. We will facilitate the creation of a functional, beautiful space. Feel free to visit our Houzz for some inspiration.

Update Your Closet Space

March 12, 2015 l Topics:Blogs l By kn

Closets, although unseen most of the time, are an important space in any home. They come in all sizes but needs in a closet are pretty universal. Your closet needs to be functional, able to hold storage and organized.

Determine Your Needs

We know space is a premium in most homes. You need to decide what is best for your space.  A few things to consider:

Budget: Closet remodeling does not have to break the bank. If you are on a tight budget a few well-place updates can completely transform your closet. One update few people consider are closet doors. They take up a significant amount of wall space and with the right update, stain, or paint will update the look of your home.

Closet Layout: Big or small, closet layout is a huge factor to consider. You should focus on your (and your family’s) needs. Do you need a space for laundry or a seating area? Will your closet include shoe shelves, mirrors, and space for storage? If so, you will need a layout to fit all of your needs/wants.

Style Personality: Every closet is a representation of your style. Decide your closet style can be tricky as there are so many choices. Are you masculine with a love for dark woods and rich colors? Do you prefer bright white and clean lines? Are you uninterested in style and more focused on functionality?

Our Picks

We are huge fans of LED lighting inside your closet. LED lighting is virtually invisible as lights are actually in the bottom of the shelf or recessed behind doors. This added light can transform the way your closet looks and it’s functionality.

Remember how we mentioned your closet needs earlier? Rev-A-Shelf has the perfect storage solution for your laundry. Their unique pull-out laundry hamper looks (and acts) like any other drawer but stores your dirty clothes out-of-sight.

How We Can Help

We have top-notch designers and carry several lines of cabinetry guaranteed to fit any home. Alongside homeowners, we have tackled every closet space ensuring that we will be able to surpass your expectations. You just tell us what you need and we will design your dream closet. If you’re unsure about what you want, we are here to help you figure it out! Contact K&N Sales to start your closet update!

Big things came in small packages at KBIS

February 26, 2015 l Topics:Blogs l By kn

There were small appliances at the Kitchen and Bath Show in Las Vegas.  Previously in this space, numerous large items for your home were highlighted.  However, several of K&N Sales’ vendors were in Nevada with small items that will fit right into your home.

Start your day off with a fresh cup of coffee

In addition to their large appliances, Miele offers a complement of small products.  For example, Miele can bring a fresh pot of coffee to your kitchen with their CM 5000 Coffee system.  This countertop model comes with adjustable cup size production and programmable strength for each cup.  The brew pot is removable and easy to clean.  What better way to start your day than a fresh cup of coffee.

An appliance to do it all in your kitchen

Big things do come in small packages.  Bosch’s Universal Plus Kitchen Machine is the ideal tool for all of your kitchen preparation needs.  The Kitchen Machine comes with an easy to use four-speed setting.  It also comes with a dough hook, scraper and double beater.  Optional accessories can be added to the machine to make it even more versatile.  The Kitchen Machine will let you do it all.

Convenience and high quality go together well

Bertazzoni lets you cook with style when your time is short.  Their Professional Series Microsoft Ovens give you the perfect tool to prepare dinner quickly.  Bertazzoni’s microwave includes pre-set cooking modes, a cooking timer and sensor controls for defrost, cook and reheat.  This small appliance from Bertazzoni brings convenience and high quality to your kitchen.

KBIS was an amazing showcase of items that would be great additions to your kitchen.  K&N Sales is proud to offer quality products that give you the home you want.  Contact K&N Sales to add a small appliance to your kitchen.

February 19, 2015 l Topics:Blogs l By kn

As you read here last week, vendors whose products are available at K&N Sales made quite a splash at the recent KBIS Conference in Las Vegas.  In fact, those vendors received so many honors at the national event that a second post is needed to properly cover all of the accolades.  K&N Sales is excited that the companies with which they are affiliated had so much success, and they are ready to help you put these high quality items into your home.

Liebherr

Liebherr’s new 24” HCB 1060 refrigerator came home with Best in Show honors.  The HCB 1060 includes BioFresh technology that keeps food fresh up to three times longer.  This integrated refrigerator/freezer tower offers innovative features that fit your busy lifestyle.  The stylish Energy Star model provides superior performance and efficiency.

U-Line

U-Line garnered Best in Show with the first-ever residential built-in modular 24” frost-free freezer. This eagerly awaited product brings you high-quality performance, flexible and ample capacities, and smooth integration capabilities.  U-Line’s modular refrigerators are the perfect alternative to big box refrigerators.

GE

Two products from GE wowed the judges and earned Best in Show awards.  Their Monogram 36” Built-In French Door Refrigerator is a superior blend of form and function.  The Monogram French Door Wall Oven puts professional grade cooking in reach.  Having doors open in the middle allows the cook to stand closer to the oven when pulling items out.  These two GE products are fit for the pros, but designed for the home.

Wood-Mode

Wood-Mode cabinetry showed off Oceanside, their Spring 2015 Spring Style Concept at KBIS.  This new lifestyle theme highlights Wood-Mode’s understanding of fashion-forward design and responsiveness to market needs.  Oceanside includes hidden storage solutions, subtle color choices, and the quality craftsmanship of Wood-Mode.

KBIS 2015 gave K&N Sales’ vendors a chance to get the attention they deserve.  KBIS is over, but these quality items are easily available to you thanks to K&N Sales.  Contact K&N Sales for assistance in making your home into an award winner.

Valentine’s Day is a great time to get your whole family involved in the celebration.  You can gather around the table in your remodeled kitchen to create crafts to share with friends and neighbors.  For those with a sweet tooth, a range from Sub Zero/Wolf is the perfect tool to use to create customized candy for the day.

A few candy items to try:

Two ingredient strawberry fudge- The easiest candy recipe ever.  Tasty and easy to make? What a combination.

Oreo Truffles-  This recipe has only three ingredients.  If Oreos aren’t your favorite, try the recipe with Nutter Butter or some other cookie variety.

Bacon Peanut Brittle- Consider this treat for the bacon lover on your list. Give it a shot.  Bacon will surprise you.

A homemade craft will go great with the candy you whip up.  Here are a few ideas that you can do on your own or, for a special touch, add the assistance of your family.

A Valentine’s Day Lei- With just a few straws, some yarn and some construction paper, you can create a heart-filled necklace for someone special.  These leis definitely spread the holiday cheer in a unique way.

Stuck on You- This is another simple project that ends with an adorable magnet as a gift for family and friends.  Place magnets on the back of decorated wooden circles.  You can use heart stamps to decorate or break out the markers and go for a customized decoration on each magnet.

Hand Print Hearts- This craft is especially perfect for smaller hands.  You can quickly make a precious heart design using some paint and a child’s hands.  The end product will be treasured for years to come.

Have fun with your Valentine’s Day preparations. May it be filled with Kandy, Krafts and Kids.  Contact K&N Sales for ideas to make your kitchen even more prepared for making treats and tasty creations throughout the year.

Super Bowl Sunday… Are You Ready?

January 28, 2015 l Topics:Blogs l By kn

You face a difficult task this weekend: host an off-the-charts Super Bowl party and keep your New Year’s resolution to eat healthy.  Before the Patriots and Seahawks take the field on Sunday, here are a few tips to help you accomplish both goals.

Invite a few close friends over early to help you set up for the event

Just like the game itself, your party can have its own pre-game show.  It won’t take a big crowd to move a few tables and make sure decorations are in their proper place.  The pre-game show is also a chance to visit with some people before the big game gets started.  Take some time before the party to figure out how best to use your remodeled kitchen.  If time allows, let your guests preview some of your healthy party snacks, like white bean dip.

Don’t hesitate to make the event a potluck

Add some variety to the party by asking guests to bring a special treat from their own kitchen.  Feel free to set a theme. Consider having guests bring items specific to various NFL cities.  Share ideas for healthy snack ideas, like zucchini fries, with your guests.

Keep it simple and low key

Be careful not to set expectations for the party.  Pressure to have “The Party of the Year” can lead to a letdown for everyone.  Just invite some friends over to enjoy the game and some healthy snacks with you.

The Super Bowl is a great event to share with your friends.  Take the time to keep it stress free and healthy, and you and your guests will be the big winners this Sunday.  Contact K&N Sales for assistance in getting your home ready for many super parties and super living.

Consider Downsizing to Increase the Efficiency of Your Storage

January 14, 2015 l Topics:Blogs l By kn

Your customized cabinetry gives you more space than ever to store your possessions, including those items that you received during the holiday season.  However, you may decide that you are going to kick off the new year by getting organized and using your storage space more efficiently.  If you are considering downsizing, here a few questions to ask yourself as you decide which items you can live without.

When is the last time I used this item?

If you haven’t used an item in over six months, you most likely can live without it.  Make a pile of these items that need to be purged and leave it overnight. If you are still ready to part with the pile the next morning, rest assured that it is expendable.

Do I like it?

Although it is simple, this is a useful question to ask.  If you don’t like something, let it go.  Save the valuable space that you have available for things you actually like.

How much is it worth today?

It is difficult to let go of items that you paid a high price for in the past. If you aren’t getting any value out of such items (tangible or intangible), consider getting rid of them.  The extra space you gain will make it worth it.

What do I do with it?

Items that you don’t have room or need for might be useful to someone else.  Various charities in the area are always looking for useful items for their clients.  A few examples are Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Houston Children’s Charities.  Also, there may be a local organization that serves your community with a donation-driven thrift store.

Start off the year with a more efficient storage plan.  Look for ways to part with those items that you don’t need any more.  Contact K&N Sales for assistance with your storage needs.

May You Have a Happy AND Safe New Year

When you go out to ring out the old year, make sure you make it to the new year safely and soundly.  Here are a few tips to make sure your celebration goes well, and you make it home in one piece.

If you are hosting your own party:

You’ve decided to make use of your customized kitchen remodel one last time in 2014.  That sounds like a great idea.  Keep these points in mind for the welfare of all your guests.  As the host, take the initiative of appointing a designated drive or two for the party.  If this is not possible, call a local taxi cab company to provide rides home for your guests.  Give people a non-alcoholic option if they so desire.  If need be, let guests know that they are very welcome to stay overnight in your home.  It’s another to show off your remodeled bathroom.

If you are going out on the town:

If you hit the road on New Year’s Eve, here are some ideas to help you make it back home safely.  First and foremost, don’t drink and drive.  If you are partying with a group, find a person in the group willing to not drink and be a designated drive.  Save the name of a reputable taxi cab company, and don’t hesitate to use it if you aren’t fit to drive.  If all else fails, stay where you are until you are sober.  It’s better to get home a few hours late than to take the risk of driving drunk.

May you have a happy and safe new year.  Contact K&N Sales to ring in the new year with an upgrade to your home.

Find A Tree That’s A Perfect Fit for Your Christmas Celebration

December 24, 2014 l Topics:Blogs l By kn
Is your Christmas tree a real tree? Or is it artificial?  With the holiday upon us, there are positives and negatives of each kind of tree that you choose to celebrate season. The Artificial Tree On the plus side, an artificial tree can be used year after year.  Also, artificial trees are inexpensive when compared to live trees, especially when their cost is spread out over numerous years.  Storing artificial trees can be a snap if you have a customized cabinet space dedicated to them.  For example, Wood-Mode cabinetry, which is on sale a K&N Sales, provides a perfect option for keeping your artificial tree safe until next December. On the negative side, there are environmental issues connected to the production of artificial trees. The Live Tree There is nothing like the smell of a fresh tree to make it feel like Christmas in your home.  The experience of picking out a tree can be an annual tradition that leads to lifelong memories.  However, a live tree does shed its leaves and create a mess.  In addition, since it is a living thing, a live tree has the potential to bring insects and other living things into your home. Pick What’s Right for You Take the time to consider which tree option is best for your lifestyle and your home.  Decide on the space where you will put your tree before you make a purchase.  This gives you a chance to measure the tree and make sure it is going to be a perfect fit for your Christmas celebration. Contact K&N Sales for assistance with customized cabinetry options for storing your Christmas tree. Happy holidays!
