Built-in vs. Free-standing Appliances
There are pros and cons to any decision you make during a remodeling project, and one of the biggest questions we hear is about the difference between built-in and free-standing appliances. Clients want to know what the major differences are, as well as the pluses and minuses that accompany their decision to install a built-in or a free-standing appliance. We want to dedicate a little time to exploring this issue, and helping you consider all of the factors that go into making this decision.
When it comes to free-standing appliances, the pros are that they tend to be less expensive than their built-in counterparts, require a simpler installation process, and are easier to change out in the future when it comes time to replace them. There are some cons, however, specifically that there are some limitations—for example the cooktop and oven have to both be electric or both be gas—and the appearance will not be as seamless with the surrounding décor as built-in appliances. In turn, one of the major pros of a built-in is that seamless visual integration, which can further be enhanced by custom cabinetry front panels. Another pro of built-ins comes when you want to install separate built-in ovens and cooktops, which allows you to install a gas cooktop while choosing an electric wall oven. The cost of a built-in will be higher, which is a con for homeowners on a limited budget, and future changes and replacements can also be more expensive, particularly if the surrounding cabinetry is impacted.
