Built-in vs. Free-standing Appliances

February 07-02-2012 l Topics:Appliances l By KN Staff

There are pros and cons to any decision you make during a remodeling project, and one of the biggest questions we hear is about the difference between built-in and free-standing appliances. Clients want to know what the major differences are, as well as the pluses and minuses that accompany their decision to install a built-in or a free-standing appliance. We want to dedicate a little time to exploring this issue, and helping you consider all of the factors that go into making this decision.

When it comes to free-standing appliances, the pros are that they tend to be less expensive than their built-in counterparts, require a simpler installation process, and are easier to change out in the future when it comes time to replace them. There are some cons, however, specifically that there are some limitations—for example the cooktop and oven have to both be electric or both be gas—and the appearance will not be as seamless with the surrounding décor as built-in appliances. In turn, one of the major pros of a built-in is that seamless visual integration, which can further be enhanced by custom cabinetry front panels. Another pro of built-ins comes when you want to install separate built-in ovens and cooktops, which allows you to install a gas cooktop while choosing an electric wall oven. The cost of a built-in will be higher, which is a con for homeowners on a limited budget, and future changes and replacements can also be more expensive, particularly if the surrounding cabinetry is impacted.

Free-standing appliances are almost always the most economical option, and they allow greater mobility, which is a nice feature when it comes to cleaning the sides and behind the appliance. A free-standing appliance may protrude beyond the cabinetry and countertops, so from an aesthetic standpoint they will not be as visually appealing, and may interrupt the overall flow of a kitchen design. Built-in appliances are usually preferred in new-home construction, and in major kitchen overhaul projects when new cabinetry will be installed along with new appliances; a total redesign can accommodate the necessary specification changes that introducing new appliances can require. Built-in appliances that are incorporated into a well-designed kitchen will add overall value to your home—something to consider if you are keeping an eye on your home’s resale value for the future.
